What Are Keloid Scars? Can Keloid Scars be removed

A Keloid Scar is an overgrowth of scar tissue that is formed around a wound; sometimes after the wound has healed. The growth of the scar is beyond the original parameter of the injury. Keloid Scars are firm, raised and pink or reddish in color. They usually have a smooth top. Their appearance is irregularly shaped and they tend to get progressively larger.

Risk Factors

People with darker skin are 15 times more likely to develop Keloids. Although, they can be found in all skin types. Keloid Scars are less prevalent in children and the elderly. Men and women are equally susceptible to Keloids. They tend to have a genetic component. A gene known as AHNAK may play a role in determining who develops these types of scars. Researchers at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Michigan identified the gene. With this  discovery, it may provide a better understanding of how Keloids develop and potentially open the door for improved treatment.  If you have known risk factors, you may want to avoid any unnecessary body piercing, surgeries or tattoos.
