What Ingredients Should I Look For In A Scar Removal Cream?

When it comes to scar creams that work, the price of a product doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a better product. Just because one product is more expensive does not mean that it will work better. Sometimes what you are paying for is the packaging. Sure, the package looks great. But, does it work? Will it make my scar look less noticeable? Instead, you want to look at the ingredients to determine if it is a good product. It is also wise to look at the reviews from other customers that have purchased the item and used it. If it worked for them, chances are it will work for you. Keep in mind every scar is different. Scars are different in size and depth. Obviously, you will get better results on a smaller scar than you would on one that is much larger or deeper.

What ingredients should you look for in scar creams that work? There are some ingredients that have been successfully used for years to treat scars. One of those ingredients is silicone. Silicone in scar prevention and healing is widely used by Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons.  Silicone has been used as scar treatment for years. It is particularly used on burn scars, which are called contracture scars. A contracture scar is when the skin is pulled and tightened sometimes limiting movement.

Onion Bulb Extract has also shown to be helpful in scar treatment. There were studies done in Turkey and Thailand that showed beneficial results for using Onion Bulb Extract on scars. Mederma Scar Cream contains Onion Bulb Extract and it is one of the leading scar creams on the market. I think most people will agree that Mederma Scar Cream stands out when you think of scar cream.

Other ingredients to look for in scar creams that work are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Cocoa Butter, Rose Hip Seed Oil, Olive Oil, Shea Butter and Peptides. All of these ingredients are good for your skin.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

We all want the scar cream to work right away, but the results will not happen overnight. You want to apply the gel or cream for several months to see the best results. It is also a good idea to exfoliate the skin along with applying the scar cream or gel. By exfoliating the skin, you are allowing new skin to be revealed and getting rid of the dead skin cells. If you have sensitive skin, you don’t want to exfoliate more than once a week. Picking a scar removal cream with a money day guarantee is also a good idea. Many of the good products allow you time to use the product and if you don’t see the results, you can return the product for a refund.

What Are My Options If A Scar Removal Cream Does Not Work?

If you have diligently used the scar cream or gel for several months and still feel that your scar has not improved to the level that is satisfactory, you can seek other avenues for reducing or removing the scar. What are those options? The Scar Cream is the least invasive and easiest route to try first. It is also the most cost-efficient. However, you could try surgical options.

Chemical Peel – A chemical would be applied to the affected area that causes the skin to peel revealing smoother skin. This is performed in the Dermatologist’s office.

Microdermabrasion – This procedure sprays tiny crystals onto the skin with a tool. These crystals gently remove the outer layer of skin to reveal smoother, brighter skin.

Laser Therapy – This is where beams of light are targeted at the scar area. Please see our article on Laser Therapy For Scar Removal.

Please keep in mind these surgical procedures can get quite costly and usually several treatments are required to see the best results. As with any surgery, you would discuss with your Dermatologist any potential risks associated with the procedure.

  1. Hi Lisa, this is a great review on scar removal creams. I have a scar on my legs but it does not really bother me. Besides, scars just disappear from my skin after a certain time. I had a small surgery done on my chin a few years back and it is hardly visible now. However, the products you featured in your review are really good ones and are available in amazon, so easy to find. If I would find the need someday, I would surely know where to look.

  2. This is a useful article on what to look for in scar removal creams and the ingredients highlighted, like onion bulb extract sound really holistic – using nature to heal the body. As with any natural products, it does take time to notice any improvement.
The other options of scar removal seem quite pricey. Is one type better for larger scars? Thanks

    • Hi Teresa, I think Amaira Scar Cream would be a great product for larger scars. Also, the ingredients in Amaira are all natural. I agree, nature is great at healing our bodies.
